What is an apple?
Imagining in your mind how would you answer this question, if this person has never seen or tasted an apple before?
Somewhat round, but not completely? Sometimes red, sometimes green? A fruit? Sweet? Sour? There’re almost no good definitive words that you can use to describe something as versatile as an apple.
I like to use this metaphor when people ask me, ‘What is mindfulness?’
Because it’s the same.
Because mindfulness is an experiential practice, a movement, a sensing, a being. And that you experience it with the body just as how you would hold an apple; feeling the smooth skin, seeing it’s colour as you see it with your eyes, and the taste. The biting into it; the sensation of the teeth crunching into the apple. The experience of it, the experience of an apple.
The words used to define an apple will never beat the actual experience of an apple.
Instead of fixating on the definition of it,
let go of the ‘what’ and experience it.
In your own body and entire being.
Moment to Moment.
