Attention.
Does something exist if no one is giving it attention?
Our rational understanding of our physical world meant that we will usually answer yes to this question. But philosophically, scientifically and technically, no one can ever prove this. Because the moment we are wanting to prove it, we are giving it attention. I am always intrigued by the possibility of such an experiment. The closest of such an experiment might be the wave-particle duality experiment whereby electrons behave like particles when observed but behave like waves when not observed. I am not an expert on this, but I remembered being extremely intrigued (and still am) when a friend of mine shared this with me years back.
Electrons is one. But it is a whole different experience if we begin to imagine that the tree or the road in front of your house do not physically existing when no one is watching.
Possible? Unlikely.
Impossible? No one knows for sure.
Your attention creates every experience in your life.
When someone smiles at you, establishing connection, aliveness and the moment becomes meaningful. You pay attention to a neglected plant, and it blooms. You finished your chores, and you remembered your kids. Before you have time to be happy that they were engaged in their own world, they somehow would be all over you, as if reading your mind. Sometimes we float around mindlessly, going about the day, till suddenly, you sit to take a breath, and notice how tight or tired you feel. Suddenly this body exists.
If I wish to focus something into existence in this moment,
Would my attention be wondrous? Kind? Gentle? Loving? Focused?
Or would it be harsh? Critical? Dismissive? Distracted?
I don’t know for sure if the tree, the lake, the building or even the universe disappears when no being watches it. But when I hold the thought – ‘my attention births everything within my perception in this moment’, somehow my senses become more defined, real, conscious and meaningful. Me pressing on these smooth solid buttons on the laptop, words appearing on this screen made of light.
Fascinating, wondrous and magical.
